This chilli, referred to as the Ghost Pepper, Naga Jolokia, Naga King Chilli, or Red Naga, is renowned as one of the spiciest varieties worldwide, characterised by an enduring heat sensation that persists long after eating.

Growing Info

Germinating Bhut Jolokia chilli requires a steady temperature of 24-28℃ and pre-soaking in a diluted tea solution can improve germination success. This chilli species is also tall, reaching heights of up to 1.2m, making staking a necessity. Water sparingly and carefully handle its fruit and seeds; protective eyewear and gloves are advised. A greenhouse or polytunnel is recommended for optimal growth. Once grown, this chilli species can reach high levels of heat. Heat levels range from 750,000 - 1.5 million Scoville Heat Units and the fruit can be dried or frozen for long-term storage.

Cooking & Eating

This chilli warrants caution; one pod should be sufficient for four to five people in any curry or sauce. Bhut Jolokia Chilli has an enduring spiciness which can persist for several hours after eating, yet it still fruity flavour and aroma. Its thin flesh means the pods are ideal for drying.
